My son leaves his university this winter and wanted me to paint his University town for giving his professor as a farewell present! It was a difficult panoramic subject but I made a brave attempt!

Suchitra Bhosle Portrait Painting Workshop Mumbai 2012

Workshop Details -------------------------------------------

Instructor :Suchitra Bhosle

December 7 , 8 , 9 2012

City : Mumbai

Provided Materials : Easels & Drawing boards.

Fees Per Day: Rs. 2,500/-

The Workshop structure ---

Learn to see and interpret the portrait with a direct method of “Alla Prima” where the entire portrait is painted wet into wet, in one sitting, recorded directly from life. The principle subject matter will be a live model. You will learn to simplify the subject and indulge in the challenge of expressing the visual tools of painting like shapes, values, edges, color and line with the economy of brushstrokes.

This workshop willinclude conversationally driven demonstrations on Design, Rhythm, Value and Colour. You will take away the basics on not only how to paint a portrait from life but be able to paint any subject matter that exudes the language of shape, value and color. You will also learn the art of simplification to render a successful painting.

---------------------------- Day 1 – Portrait Demos. ----------

Session 1-Portrait Sketch-Front profile 3hrs

Watch the process of the block-in and break down of the planesof the head with emphasis on seeing the right Shapes, Values and Edges from a live model.

Break for lunch -1hr

Session2- Portrait Sketch- Side profile or Three-fourths profile 3hrs

This session will reinforce the basic principles of building a portrait from session 1 with a different set up of lighting.

In addition, a peek into the how of mixing skin tones and mixing the right color will be briefly addressed.

This demo will be followed by a Q&A session in an informal interactive setting.
Day 2 (Open only to Workshop attendees) 6hrs, 1-hour lunch break --

Focus will be on seeing color relationships and the ability to mix actual colors that you see resulting in skin tones.

The model will be posed with a side-lit type of lighting. Begin the session watching Suchitra do a quick demonstrationfrom a live model to reinforce the block in and a conversational demonstration on how to see and mix skin tones. Hands on guidance of mixing colors and turning forms with temperature than value will be the emphasis of the day. Color harmony will be discussed based on the specific lighting situation.

----------------------------------------------------------- Day 3 (Open only to Workshop attendees) 6hrs 1-hr lunch break --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Focus of the day will be on applying the visual concept of light and shadow to build the portrait.

Begin with the basic principles of portrait construction, with the model set up with a top-down lighting.

Emphasis will be on defining the key concept of light and shadow and composing the portrait with this concept in mind.

Students will simplify the visual dialogue and take the painting from start to finish with stress on design, composition and the visual concept of light and shadow.

The second half of the day, Suchitra will critique every student’s work to help further understand her concepts.

Glamour....An Acrylic painting in African series by Manisha Vedpathak

 Glamour
Acrylic on canvas
Diptych ,39.37" * 39.37" each

This painting was inspired from the girls I
see at a supershop in Accra. They look after the
perfumes section of the shop. All are tall, slim and
look very presentable in their traditional outfit.
Of course they don't wear the headdress in the
shop but I have seen ladies wearing in their
functions. And they look so gorgeous and
 glamorous in it.

A. Murugesan: A view of the city of Luneberg in Northern Germany

The picturesque city of Luneberg offers many views for a landscape painter! This one is my favourite spot, the view is from the bridge opposite from where I took the photo which is used here.
